Atziri Camarena

Atziri CamarenaMy name is Atziri Camarena, I am a twenty-year old Latina, born on January 14, 1988. I was born and raised in South Los Angeles to a single mother of seven children, me being the third youngest. Though we did not have the luxuries as many children did, that did not create an impact in my life, because my mother always implemented strong moral values and education into our lives. I am currently a third year student on an Academic Scholarship at the University of California San Diego, where I am a Political Science Major. I graduated from Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School Magnet program in 2006, where I graduated in the top five percent of my class with honors and a 3.8 GPA. Throughout high school, I excelled in sports playing on the Varsity Basketball and Softball Teams. I was also a member of the French Club, Powder-Puff Yearbook staff, and Student Body Vice-President and I received the Ephebian Society Award.

While growing-up in South Los Angeles in a neighborhood surrounded by drugs, alcohol and gang affiliation, I have been a youth advocate for the community. I have mentored many teenagers in my community helping them find jobs, graduate from high school, participate in charity work, and to advise them that it does not matter where we come from—what matters is what we do in life! As a result of my extensive work with the youth in my community, the City of Los Angeles awarded me with the Urban Hero Award in 2004. I currently work for North American Security (NAS) and have been employed by them for the past two and a half years. The owners (Art Lopez and Ken Hillman) have personally developed my public relations skills and managerial skills. However, most importantly they have taught me how to be a team player. Working with NAS has been a great pleasure and they have personally created a working environment that is conducive to my school schedule—in fact that demand that I complete my college education as a condition of employment. I am honored to work for such a great company that has taken me under their wing and taught me how to become a future leader. My motto in life is simple, "Life has no obstacles, but the ones that we create!"
